Chief Designer Sam Smith
Consolidated XL's chief designer Sam Smith used to train customers using a leading UK SME accounting package, back in 1998, with many of the functions you see here. Many potential customers fell in love with this functionality when it was demonstrated to them. They chose the package over rival systems due to this Excel reporting functionality, enabling them to create innovative and time-saving management reports in Excel. This included analysing data from many different companies, budget tracking and analysis by cost centre and department—known as Tracking Categories in Xero, and Classes and Locations in QuickBooks.
Later, he developed a set of functions that queried an accounts database for data between dates for a rival accounting package. Its performance was poor, however, and it made the functions complicated. Implementing an engine to process the accounts data and summarise it by a known period is the key.
For optimal performance, the Consolidated XL Function Library summarises data by account, calendar month, quarter, period and all 52 weeks of the year.

Kim has had a colourful life. She started work for an adult entertainment company on the sun-kissed west coast in 2009 as Head of Finance. In this role, she gained a good knowledge of online accounting and payroll systems, dealing with a varied array of employees and skill sets.
In 2015 she moved on to work for some of the top online accounting software firms and has joined us on this adventure to give accountants worldwide relief from the frustration of manually typing in figures.
